Gearheads of Texas State discuss the car junkie lifestyle
By: Brach Foster
SAN MARCOS – Members representing the Gearheads of Texas
State spread light on the way of life behind any car lover.
Since 2009, more and more individuals have joined the
organization. A majority of the members can give the 411 on what cars are ‘hot
on the street’ and show off whatever fancy gizmo their car has to offer.
Speaking with a few of the guys from the club, it was
entertaining to learn about what cars are predominantly seen across campus and
all the different kind of upgrades each of their cars have. Even though some of
the cars they drive come off glamourous, one Gearhead member made it clear that
anyone can come out here with any kind of car. Hot rod or not, that isn’t an
issue.
“You don’t necessarily have to have a hot rod, or any type
of fast car to come out here and be with us,” said three-year member Q
Daugherty. “You just have to like cars.”
The Gearheads certainly like their cars and know what kind
of cars are ‘hot on the street’. Talking with three-year member Ethan Coyle,
there was much to learn about when it came to popular cars throughout San
Marcos.
“What’s good about the campus is that it’s pretty diverse
with all the cars you see,” Coyle said. “I see a lot of Miata’s, Mustangs, and
a lot of pick-up trucks as well. Depending on the meet, you’ll typically see
different cars every week that show up.”
Along with all the speculation of cars that the Gearheads
typically see, they can also go on and on about the upgrades behind their cars.
Quite a few of these guys have some interesting gizmos that most cars wouldn’t
typically possess.
“I drive a 2003 Toyota Celica,” said two-year member Mike
Evans. “I installed a weighted shift knob and a colder air intake for the AC
system. I have lights underneath my car that synchronize to the beat of whatever
music is being played, but my favorite part is the N64 I have hooked up in the
very back.”
